Myung-Hwan Whangbo教授生于1945年，现任美国北卡罗莱纳州立大学知名教授（Distinguished Professor）。他是固体物理化学领域泰斗级教授，在固体材料的电输运，磁性和光电功能的研究方面具有丰富的经验和很高的造诣，他的这些研究经验和科学直觉为许多实验及技术工作者提供了许多重要的启发和指导。其研究成果发表在Science （3篇），Nature系列（2篇），Phys. Rev. Lett. (13篇)，Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.（11篇），J. Am. Chem. Soc.（52篇）等物理和化学的一流杂志上。迄今为止，他已经发表论文700余篇，出版论著3部，论文的总引用量达到24000多次。同时，Myung-Hwan Whangbo教授担任Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism 的副主编，Materials Research Bulletin, Solid State Sciences等多个期刊编委，组织或受邀参加过上百场大型国际会议。
内容提要：The structures and properties of solid state materials are commonly discussed on the basis of ionic electron counting, which divides a given compound into cations and anions. This talk will survey various structures and properties of solid state materials that can be understood by considering their local cation-anion interactions.
